First I want to say that I believe this point to be authentic and I know that the dealer is above board as I have bought numerous points from him in the past.  My question is:  Is a 3 3/4" Hardin that Davis graded a 5, worth $416.77?

I wouldn't think so, with that missing barb and the tip ding.

I see two things at play, First it looks like the last two bidders got into a bidding war and pushed it up.  The third bidder dropped out under $100.  Second, it looks like a G-9 or 10 quality piece with a tip/barb ding which is a different beast than overall poorly made piece.

Apparently it was to someone.  With some minor restoration it will look like a piece worth twice that.  Something to think about.

That would have been a perfect candidate for restoration as nice as it is and as little as is needed.

I wouldn't have paid that much for it though myself.

Thanks to all who replied.

I was just very surprised that it went that high.  When it was first listed, I believed that it would go for under $100, particularly since both the tip and a tang was missing.  At 3 3/4" it also isn't particularly large.  The photographs just make it look much larger than it really is.  When I am considering bidding on an item, I will transfer the image to my computer, resize it to actual listed size and then virtually restore it if it has defects to see what it would look like restored.  As Joshua said, this is a very nicely made point, but in my opinion it is not worth the price paid.
